Soaking in Serenity: My CIDP Stress Relief Escape to Thermal Park Vrbov in Slovakia
Nestled beneath the majestic peaks of the High Tatras, where the air is crisp and the mountains whisper ancient secrets, lies a hidden gem straight out of a fairytale—Thermal Park Vrbov.
Located in the quaint village of Vrbov, Slovakia—just 7 km from Kežmarok, 13 km from Poprad, and about 200 km from the town of Sanok in Poland, where our organized tour began—this geothermal spa is renowned for its healing thermal waters, which are among the most therapeutic in Central Europe.
And this is precisely where my husband and I chose to celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day.

But my love for water goes beyond admiration.
Especially since I fell ill, water has become my favorite therapist.
It’s soft yet strong, embracing yet liberating.
It’s like I’m washing away all the worry and pain, summoning ancient spirits of serenity with every ripple.
For me, water isn’t just an element; it’s a sanctuary, a place where I can breathe freely and let go. It’s magic in its purest form, and every time I dip beneath its surface, I feel just a little more whole.
It heals without saying a word. When I’m immersed in it—whether floating in the ocean’s salty cradle or soaking in the comfort of a warm bathtub—it’s more than just relaxation. It’s an emotional release.
Now with all that being said just imagine soaking in warm, mineral-rich pools while gazing up at snow-capped summits.
Bliss, right?
But this isn’t just about relaxation—it’s about healing, especially for those of us navigating the twists and turns of neurological autoimmune diseases.
The Healing Power of Vrbov’s Mineral Waters for CIDP & Lewis-Sumner Wellness
What makes Vrbov’s mineral waters truly magical?
It’s the unique blend of minerals infused deep within the Earth. Sourced from over 2,000 meters underground, the geothermal springs of Vrbov emerge at a scalding 59°C, packed with minerals renowned for their therapeutic and restorative properties.
Cooled to comfortable pool temperatures, these mineral-rich waters have been shown to support wellness for chronic neurological conditions like CIDP and Lewis-Sumner Syndrome, while also benefiting a dozen other health concerns.
Regular balneotherapy here offers a natural, soothing way to enhance mobility, reduce inflammation, and improve overall quality of life for those managing autoimmune neuropathies.

Floating My Worries Away
As I submerged myself in one of the ten outdoor pools, I felt the warm water cradle my body, gently easing away muscle tension.
Living with CIDP, Lewis-Sumner Syndrome variant, a rare chronic autoimmune neurological condition, involves dealing with muscle weakness, twitches, nerve tingling, numbness, fatigue, and other difficult-to-describe sensations.
This daily discomfort and fatigue significantly diminish my quality of life.
However, in this moment, I experienced a level of relief that is hard to express.
It was like my body finally called a truce, even if just for a moment. I was almost suspicious—wondering if my nerves had taken a coffee break.
It wasn’t a miracle cure, but it was enough to remind me that even on the toughest days, a little comfort is still possible.

Why Geothermal Spas Could Be a Game-Changer for CIDP Warriors
The therapeutic mix of minerals, warmth, and weightlessness is a potent combination. The anti-inflammatory properties help reduce pain and stiffness, while the warm water improves circulation and promotes relaxation.
For those with neurological conditions like mine, the sensation of weightlessness reduces pressure on joints and muscles, easing nerve pain and muscle spasms.
It’s my DIY cryotherapy… or my version of a polar plunge, minus the applause and glory.
Many studies (ask Google) have shown that balneotherapy—soaking in mineral-rich waters for healing—can work wonders for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain.
And while there’s not a ton of research specifically on neurological autoimmune diseases just yet (if there will be I’ll volunteer), the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits are pretty darn promising.
If these magical waters can soothe aching joints and stubborn pain, who’s to say they can’t work a little magic on frayed nerves too?
At the very least, it’s the most relaxing “treatment” you’ll ever try!
Travel Tips for Visiting Vrbov
Planning a visit? Here are some practical tips:
- When to Visit: The park is open year-round, except December 24th. Winter visits are magical, with snow-capped mountains and steamy pools.
- Getting There: Vrbov is easily accessible from Poprad (13 km) or Kežmarok (7 km). If flying, Poprad Airport is the closest option.
- Where to Stay: On-site bungalows are convenient, or explore guesthouses in Kežmarok.
- What to Bring: Swimsuit, flip-flops, and a towel. The park also rents towels if needed.
- Food: Available on the site but we usually bring our lunch, snacks, and drinks because going to the bar means changing into dry clothes and then back to a swimsuit – too much fuss and waste of precious time in the waters.
- Accessibility Tips: The park accommodates visitors with mobility issues. If you have a neurological condition, take it slow and listen to your body.
- Health Precautions: Consult your healthcare provider before trying new wellness therapies, especially if you have a chronic illness.
